Vaccinations and the Elderly
It's that time of year when the temperature is dropping, which means that the change in seasons can and will cause havoc with the elderly. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 60% of 65 year old individuals are hospitalized due to the flu season.
In our community, we have several wonderful participating locations that the elderly can visit to prepare against many common diseases. The protection of simple vaccinations can ward against the flu, pneumonia, shingles, pertussis (whooping cough), and many others. These are common and easy solutions to life-threatening conditions.
The participation of locations, such as Wal-mart, Walgreens, CVS, Target, and occasionally large grocery stores, have pharmacists available to administer those vaccinations. These vaccinations come at a minimal cost or are covered under many insurance plans for preventative health conditions. Most accept walk-ins and appointments on short notice. The best plan for a comfortable, happy, and winter constitution is to check with your local pharmacy for the available vaccinations. This is an easy and preventable situation to prepare for.
